Ivan Alexandrovich was born in 1812, on June 18th. Goncharov's parents were merchants. At the age of seven the boy lost his father, the godfather took up his education, and his mother led the farm.
At the insistence of a practical mother, Goncharov went to study in Moscow, in a commercial school. Very early realized his craving for writing, he did not like studying.
In the school Goncharov conducts almost eight boringyears, because the commerce does not carry him at all. Finally, he persuades his mother to file a petition in the school, throws it and enters the Moscow University at the Faculty of Literature in August 1831. She studies there for three years. From this moment on, Goncharov's biography changes from boring to creative. He gets acquainted with many writers. Simultaneously, Belinsky, Herzen, Ogarev, Lermontov, Turgenev, Aksakov are studying at the university.
Goncharov is against his willreturn to Simbirsk, the city in which he was born. He receives a letter from the governor and 11 months he works as his secretary. Then he leaves for St. Petersburg and goes to the Ministry of Finance, to the Foreign Trade Department as an interpreter. And then a very important event is taking place, the chronological table of Goncharov includes a unique phenomenon. He is one of the few writers of the time who managed to make a round-the-world trip.
Ivan Aleksandrovich is appointed secretaryGeneral Putyatin in 1852. And he goes with him on a journey of two and a half years. Then he landed on the shore of the Sea of Okhotsk and the whole of Russia travels by land. From the first day of the expedition Goncharov conducts travel notes. They are published first in separate fragments, then the collection of short stories "Frigate Pallada", which is now called a novel, is published.

Returning from the trip, Ivan Alexandrovichcomes to the service of the censor. To people of this profession at that time the attitude was very unattractive, and Goncharov soon leaves this work. However, in 1862 he returned as the editor-in-chief of the newspaper Severnaya Pochta, as it was necessary to live on something. After some time, he is appointed adviser for the press, and he becomes the chief censor. Strongly stands on the conservative positions, supports the state foundations, because of what quarrels with many like-minded literary craftsmen. In 1867 Ivan Aleksandrovich finally retires and finishes writing "The Cliff" - his last novel.
In 1844, at the age of 30, Ivan Goncharov conceived the novel "Ordinary History", and three years later he published in the journal Sovremennik.
In 1849, in March, the "Sleep of Oblomov" was publishedin the literary collection with illustrations. In the same year Goncharov goes to Simbirsk and seriously ponders the novel. And only after 10 years the novel "Oblomov" is published in "Otechestvennye zapiski", broken into four numbers.
In 1869, the novel "The Cliff" was published. On this chronological table Goncharova as a writer can be finished. This will be his last major work. After that he will write only "Better late than never" - an essay explaining all his creative successes and failures, how and why he wrote.
Goncharov's biography was rather modest,man, he was melancholic, closed. In 1891, he died without leaving any of the heirs. He was not married once, and all his literary heritage goes to the old faithful servant.
